The
C.P. MacGregor transcriptions were not originally
commercial recordings. They were initially released
on 16" vinyl and were syndicated to radio stations
throughout North America. The Trio recorded roughly
243 songs for MacGregor as the King Cole Trio.
On more than a few occasions the Trio backed singers
like Anita O'Day, who appears on this collection
(purportedly these sessions were Anita's audition
tapes for the vocalist job in Stan Kenton's band).
Transcription companies thrived for many years into
the fifties. Capitol approved of the Trio's recording
of transcriptions, in part because of the exposure
as wall as a good publicity these war effort broadcasts
engendered where they were utalized. Nat's rich
voca confidence comes through and his knack for
ballads emanates from recordings such as the lovely
"Laura" and the seldom heard "If
Yesterday Could Only Be Tomorrow." His touch
on the piano is simplt superb, as is Oscar Moore's
shimmering interplay on the guitar, all being held
by the solid bass timing of Johnny Miller.
This is by far the best version of the Trio, which
remained a solid unit until Moore's departure in
1947 followed by miller's exit in 1948. Both joined
Oscar's brother' group 'Johnny Moore's Three Blazers',
a very good Trio-sounding group featuring Charles
Brown on vocals and piano. In the ensuing years,
the Trio essentially backed Nat King Cole,
with Nat becoming the focus. Nat eventually stood
away from the piano seat, playing less and less
to become the great crooner he is now remembered.
